OUR MISSION

Housed in the Division of Undergraduate Education, the Student Parents & Families (SPF) Program at the University of California, Irvine strives to help student parents, guardians and/or caregivers the proper support to maximize their college experience by providing a supportive and family-friendly environment at Student Success Initiatives. We are dedicated to guiding students with the necessary resources to meet both their academic and familial needs.

 

OUR VISION & GOALS

To enable a successful transition through UC Irvine and help students to succeed and thrive.

  • To provide a support system for students with children and families.
  • To help student parents, guardians, and or/caregivers transition and maximize their college experience and thrive at UC Irvine.
  • To help student parents, guardians, and or/caregivers reach their academic and personal goals.
 

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM SERVICES

  • Priority Registration
    SPF participants can verify their parental/caregiver/guardian responsibilities with the SPF counselor to receive priority registration.
  • One-on-One Personalized Support
    SPF participants have access to the SPF Counselor throughout the academic year and during the summer. Counseling support can include (although not limited to) on-campus and off-campus resources, academic referrals, employment and career support, wellness support, and any other personal support you and your family may need.
  • Housing and Childcare Support
    SPF participants can receive housing and childcare guidance, referrals, advocacy, and support.
  • Academic and Enrichment Monthly Workshops
    Workshops are designed explicitly for SPF participants and will take place throughout the school year. Workshops will cover various topics, including on-campus resources and opportunities, time management and study skills, health and wellness, financial literacy, summer planning, career exploration, graduate school preparation, etc. Specific workshops collaborate with other workshop initiatives at Student Success Initiatives and the Transfer Student Hub.
  • Testing Material and Printing
    SPF participants have access to free printing and testing materials such as scantrons and blue books
  • LARC Tutoring Scholarship
    UCI offers on-campus tutoring through the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC). This scholarship allows SPF participants to have their LARC tutoring paid for by SSI. SPF participants must complete an online scholarship agreement form and adhere to the agreement’s terms every quarter.

  • Textbook and Chrome Book Loan Program
     SPF participants may borrow available textbooks, chrome books, and material each quarter, at no cost to them, through the Gateway Initiatives Book and Chromebook Loan Program. SPF participants may check out up to two textbooks or course materials per quarter and are given a contract each quarter.
  • CalFresh Assistance
    The SPF Program works closely with the on-campus CalFresh Advocates to help and guide the SPF participants with the CalFresh application. SPF participants have access to other Fresh Hub services such as emergency meal swipes
  • Referrals to on-campus liaisons and community organizations
    SPF participants are referred to our liaison for academic advising and support, housing issues, financial aid concerns, and mental health services.
  • Welcoming Community and Study Space
    SPF participants are welcomed and encouraged to visit the Student Success Initiatives office. SPF participants have access to their SPF Counselor/Coordinator.
  • CalWorks Verification
    SPF Counselor/Coordinator will complete Welfare-to-Work Referral for Education/Training form.
  • Community Support
    SPF participants and their families are invited to social/community events throughout the academic year.
  • Graduation Support
    Cap and gown loan rental program (little anteater cap and gown gifted to family) Complimentary professional graduation photos for you and your family.

Priority Registration

In accordance with AB2881, if you are a student parent, court-ordered guardian, or adopted child(ren), you can qualify for priority registration. Please fill out the link below and schedule an appointment with any of our Transfer Counselor / Coordinators to present documentation of your parental status to receive priority registration. To schedule an appointment, you can select one of the following Counselor / Coordinators: Ananda Van BoeyenBlanca VillagomezAdeeva MyersMartha Contreras, and Joanna Hernandez.
